Testing and verifying your internet speeds and network is critical to having a successful streaming event. If your upload speeds are not fast or stable, this will greatly affect the quality of your stream. If you cannot improve your internet speeds and network, we recommend considering streaming pre recorded content with us.
Below are steps to prepare and test your internet and network for streaming.
1) Connect your streaming device to the internet:
While you can stream using a wireless internet connection, it is always recommended you hardwire your computer or mobile device. Below are adapters that allow you to accept ethernet if you do not have an ethernet port on your computer or mobile device.
- Apple Mobile device (Lightning)
- Mobile/Mac device (USB C)
- Multi-port including ethernet (USB C, iPad/Mac device) Good if using hardline ethernet and an audio interface
- Multi-port including ethernet (Lightning, Apple Mobile device) Good if using hardline ethernet and an audio interface
2) Test your internet speed long before your event.
You can test your internet speed here. Ideally, you'll have hard line ethernet connection. If your only option is to use wifi, make sure that it is a closed, dedicated network for your stream.
3) Your upload speed will determine what resolution your network can handle.
Take the UPLOAD speed it gives you, NOT the download speed and compare to the “Upload Speed” chart below.
Upload Speed |
Resolution |
Required Bitrate |
Under 1.5 Mbps |
360p |
300-800 kbps |
1.5 Mbps to 5 Mbps |
480p |
500-1500 kbps |
5 Mbps to 10 Mbps |
720p |
1000-3000 kbps |
10-20 Mbps |
1080p |
2000-5000 kbps |
4) Open your streaming application and set the encoder to the settings your network can handle.
What type of streaming applications can I use?
